Monday, August 10, 2015 Pre-Assessment Students will take a pre-assessment over science process skills. This will not be graded, but will be used for instruction guidance. Students will be allowed to correct the test at the end of the unit for a summative grade. Tuesday, August 11, 2015 Classroom Procedures and Expectations/variables Class will work together to review school expectations and establish classroom expectations. Independent, dependent, and controlled variables will be reviewed. Wednesday, August 12, 2015 Variables/ Bluegrass Investigation We will continue our practice with variables, then introduce the Bluegrass Investigation. Thursday, August 13, 2015 Bluegrass Investigation Students will select their test plot and begin their experiment. Initial measurements will be taken. Friday, August 14, 2015 Bluegrass Investigation/ interactive practice We will discuss proper measurement and observer bias, then practice our science process skills using inter actives on the class resources section of this site. Monday-Thursday, August 17-20, 2015 Coke and Pepsi Lab/ Data gathering for Bluegrass Lab Students will design an investigation based on their chosen independent variable to determine its relationship to the ability to distinguish Coke and Pepsi. The entire scientific process will be completed. Friday, August 21, 2015 Scientific Process Mythbusters As we watch an episode of Mythbusters, students will identify the parts of the scientific method in the video. Monday-Tuesday, August 24-25, 2015 Metric Conversions We will see how easy it is to convert quantities between different metric units. Individual homework will be assigned on Tuesday to check and turn in on Wednesday. Wednesday-Thursday, August 26-27, 2015 Graduated Cylinder Lab Students will utilize the entire scientific process as they investigate the volume of marbles. Bluegrass measurements Friday, August 28, 2015 Graphing review/Skills practice We will review multiple science skills. A worksheet will be assigned. Monday-Tuesday, August 31-September 1, 2015 Bluegrass investigation Completion of bluegrass investigation. Wednesday, September 2, 2015 Graphing practice Graphing steps will be reviewed and an assignment will be given to practice. Thursday, September 3, 2015 Science process skills summative assessment Students will be allowed to correct their pre-test as a summative assessment. Science process skills of reading equipment, graphing, supporting claims with evidence, metric conversions, variables and parts of a scientific investigation will be assessed. Friday, September 4, 2015 Body Proportions Time will be allowed to complete the assessment, then students will use measurement skills to find relationships between body measurements. Tuesday, September 8, 2015 Digestive System Introduction We will discuss the proportional design of our bodies and introduce the Golden Ratio structure in our bodies. An introduction to the digestive system and our mouth is shared in Google to complete. Wednesday, September 9, 2015 Scientific Method at Home We will watch a Bill Nye episode concerning science experiments that are replicable at home. A comprehension worksheet will be completed as video is watched. Thursday, September 10, 2015 Digestive System - the Mouth An overview of the digestive system will be reviewed. An experiment investigating the enzyme action our mouths to begin the digestive process will be conducted. Friday-Thursday, September 11-17, 2015 Digestive system measurements A week long process of investigating comparative lengths and processes of organs in the digestive system will begin. Friday, September 18, 2015 Nutrients and Absorption We will read about various nutrients and their function in the human body. While this is occurring, we will conduct an experiment modeling absorption. Monday-Tuesday, September 21-22, 2015 Food labels We will examine food labels to make wise decisions concerning options. Wednesday, September 23, 2015 Fat in foods A discussion about nutrition will focus on fats in foods. Amount of fat in popular fast food choices will be measured and made visible. Thursday-Monday, September 23-28, 2015 Supersize me We will watch a video documentary about a man that experimented with fast food on his own body. a reflection will be assigned. Tuesday-Wednesday, September 29-30, 2015 Digestive health and Disorders We will discuss healthy choices for our digestive system. Then see a video clip discussing some digestive disorders. Finally, together we will create a slideshow exploring some common digestive disorders. Thursday-Friday, October 1-2, 2015 Eating Disorders Various eating disorders will be discussed, "Dying to be Thin" will be watched and discussed. Tuesday, October 6, 2015 Summative test review. Test will be over standard 7.3.7, I can's dealing with the digestive system. Tuesday, March 8, 2016 Rock Cycle Demo We will explore the rock cycle with a crayon activity "making" each type of rock and discussing. Wednesday, March 9, 2016 Rock Cycle Reading The rock cycle reading and questions will be assigned and worked on during class. Thursday, March 10, 2016 Rock Cycle review Key questions and answers from the reading/worksheet will be discussed, a short video for review will be watched, and a summative assessment review sheet will be distributed with work time in class if possible. Friday, March 11, 2016 Rock Summative Assessment An assessment over the three types of rocks and the rock cycle standard I can's will be given. Monday-Wednesday, March 14-16, 2016 Soil Science Students will examine soil with presentation, discussion, and 3 activities. The in-class activities will include an investigation of components in dry soil, a porosity and percolation assessment activities. Thursday-Friday, March 17-18, 2016 Geologic Time Students will examine geologic time scale and features with interactive modules and written work. Fossils will be displayed and examined in class. Monday, March 27, 2016 Energy Introduction Students will brainstorm about various energy types, then add to the list while watching a video. Tuesday, March 29, 2016 What is Energy Students will read chapter 13 section 1 with a partner and answer questions. Work is shared on Google. Wednesday, March 30, 2016 Converting Energy in a Power Plant Adaptive Curriculum will be utilized for students to complete an activity planning and understanding power plants. Thursday, March 31, 2016 Energy Transformations Students will participate in a discussion reviewing energy concepts, then read and discuss chapter 13 section 2. Questions will be assigned. Friday-Tuesday, April 1 -5, 2016 Energy Forms Slideshow Students will work in groups of 3 to complete a slideshow containing information about 6 different types of energy that we use. Slideshows will be shared. Wednesday, April 6, 2016 Energy Formative Students will take a formative over standard 7.1.1. Then, time will be allowed to play a Jason City interactive trying to manage all facets of a city's energy use and needs. Thursday- Friday, April 7-8, 2016 Conduction, Convection, and Radiation Information will be shared about heat transfer methods with a focus on identifying real life situations. A lab testing conduction of different materials will be performed. Monday, April 11, 2016 Conduction, Convection, and Radiation We will enjoy popcorn prepared 3 ways as watching Bill Nye Heat. Study time will then be available. Wednesday, October 14, 2015 Circulatory System - Blood Vessels Arteries, veins, and capillaries will be discussed and notes taken. Students will practice taking their radial pulse and using a stethoscope. Thursday-Friday, October 15-16, 2015 Circulatory System - diagram/story Students will complete a circulatory system diagram and then write a story about the pathway taken by a "particle" in the blood. Monday, October 19, 2015 Circulatory System - Blood Blood components will be discussed and notes taken. Blood will be looked at under the microscope. Tuesday, October 20, 2015 Blood Types Different blood types will be explained and a blood donor simulation lab will be conducted. Wednesday, October 21, 2015 Blood donation Information gained from the lab will be used to establish blood donation "rules" and procedures will be discussed. Thursday-Friday, October 22-23, 2015 Circulatory System health and disorders A slide show will be created on Google and shared that gives healthy circulatory system tips and explanations of two disorders. Monday-Wednesday, October 26-28, 2015 Running Lab We will prepare, conduct, and analyze heart health and recovery time with a lab that uses our own data. Thursday - Monday, October 29-November 2, 2015 HIV/AIDS After viewing how the immune system works, we will explore HIV and AIDS through discussion and activity. There will be a combined class debate about "Melissa" going to school with HIV. Tuesday, November 3, 2015 Circulatory System Review A secretive review (which will be left open for practice) will be used and discussed to prepare for a summative test. Wednesday, November 4, 2015 Circulatory System Summative Test Thursday - Friday, November 5-6, 2015 Respiratory System We will learn about the respiratory system using a video, inter actives, and discussion. A reading comprehension worksheet will be assigned on Friday. Monday, November 9, 2015 Excretory System We will read and discuss a text about the excretory system and answer questions. Tuesday, November 10, 2015 Excretory and all system review Time will be allotted to complete the excretory system questions. A summarizing assignment will be given to make a cartoon about 3 organs that we have studied arguing that they are the most important in the body. Reasons for each organ must be given. Wednesday, November 11, 2015 No school - all missing assignments must be turned in prior to this date for credit. Thursday-Monday, November 12-16, 2015 Fantastic Voyage We will watch the 1966 classic movie of a miniaturized crew through the human body. Tuesday, November 17, 2015 Cells introduction: Adaptive Curriculum We will use an adaptive curriculum module and answer questions to learn about cell theory, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Wednesday - Friday, November 18-20, 2015 Cell Structures Slideshow and Presentations Partners will be assigned different cell structures to create a slide show. The entire class slideshow will then be presented and students will take notes. Monday-Thursday, November 30-December 3, 2015 Unicellular Organisms/Microscope We will explore microorganisms in pond water, identify using the Internet and video, plant cells, animal cells, yeast, mold, and bacteria. We will also learn proper procedures to use the microscope and assess. Friday-Monday, December 4-7, 2015 Multicellular Organisms The different cells in a human body will be discussed and notes will be taken. We will also look at differentiation. Tuesday, December 8, 2015 Summative review We will review material on summative and record information about where to study. Then, we will review watching Bill Nye's Cells. Wednesday, December 9, 2015 Summative Assessment Thursday-Friday, December 10-11, 2015 Mitosis Flipbook Mitosis will be introduced and discussed.
